Mother Of Freddie Owens Pleads For Son's Life As His Execution Date Draws Near
Death Row Inmate Freddie Owens's Execution Date Nears
In a last-ditch effort to spare her son's life, the mother of South Carolina death row inmate Freddie Owens is pleading for clemency. Owens is scheduled to be executed on June 29 for the 1996 murder of Eunice Pough.
Freddie Owens's Mother Makes Desperate Plea
Owens's mother, Freddie Mae Owens-Mitchell, has been visiting her son regularly on death row and says he has changed since his conviction. "He's become a different person," she said. "He's become a better person." Owens-Mitchell also said her son is remorseful for his crime and has been trying to atone for it.
"He's always helping other people on death row," she said. "He's always trying to help other people who are less fortunate than him."
Owens's Attorneys Appeal To Supreme Court
Owens's attorneys have filed an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing that his death sentence is unconstitutional. They argue that Owens is intellectually disabled and should not be eligible for execution.
The Supreme Court has not yet decided whether it will hear Owens's case.
Owens's Execution Date Approaches
Owens's execution date is rapidly approaching, and his mother is running out of time to save his life. She is asking the governor of South Carolina to grant her son clemency.
"I'm begging the governor to please give my son a chance to live," she said. "He deserves a chance to live."
